This is general information, not a quote. Rates below reflect typical Southwest Michigan pricing patterns and can vary by company, vehicle type, and time of day — always ask for a price before the truck is dispatched.
Michigan Doesn’t Regulate Tow Rates
Unlike some states, Michigan does not set a maximum price a towing company can charge for a standard tow. Each operator sets its own rates. That’s why two companies towing the same car the same distance can quote prices 40-60% apart — there’s no state cap forcing them into a narrow range. It’s also why it’s worth asking for a price up front instead of assuming all tow companies charge the same.
The Charges That Typically Make Up a Tow Bill
- Hookup fee — the base charge for a truck showing up and loading your vehicle, regardless of distance.
- Per-mile rate — charged on top of the hookup fee, usually only for the miles your vehicle is actually on the truck (“loaded miles”) in urban areas. Rural companies sometimes charge portal-to-portal, meaning from their lot and back, not just the trip with your car.
- Flatbed premium — a flatbed (full deck, all four wheels off the ground) costs more than a wheel-lift tow because it’s required for AWD vehicles, low-clearance cars, and anything already damaged.
- After-hours surcharge — nights, weekends, and holidays commonly carry a surcharge over standard daytime rates.
- Storage fee — a daily charge if your vehicle sits at an impound lot rather than going straight to your home or a shop.
- Drop fee — if a truck already hooked up your vehicle but you cancel before it’s actually towed, some companies charge a fee to release it. Michigan has no statute governing this specific charge, so it varies by company — ask before you cancel.
Why Prices Vary So Much
Vehicle type, time of day, distance, and whether it’s a flatbed or wheel-lift job all move the price. A cash call (you calling directly) is usually priced differently than a motor-club dispatch (AAA, Allstate, Agero, and similar), since motor clubs negotiate fixed low rates with towing companies in exchange for steady volume.
What To Ask Before You Say Yes
- What’s the hookup fee, and what’s included in it?
- Is the mileage rate loaded-mile or portal-to-portal?
- Is there an after-hours surcharge right now?
- If my vehicle goes to storage, what’s the daily rate?
