A short, ordered checklist for the minutes right after a crash — before the adrenaline makes it hard to think straight.
Call (269) 925-9573Before anything else — yourself, then passengers, then the other vehicle if it’s safe to approach. Call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt, even if it seems minor. Some injuries, especially whiplash, don’t show symptoms right away.
If the vehicles are drivable and nobody is seriously hurt, Michigan law generally expects you to move out of the travel lane to the shoulder or a nearby lot to avoid a secondary crash. If a vehicle can’t be moved safely, turn on hazards and stay clear of traffic rather than standing in the roadway.

Photograph vehicle damage, the position of the vehicles, license plates, road conditions, and any visible skid marks or debris before anything is moved, if it’s safe to do so.

Report the accident to your insurer as soon as you reasonably can, with your photos, the police report number, and the tow receipt if there was one.
