How Long Does a Tow Really Take? Understanding ETAs

24/7 emergency towing in Southwest Mi

“How long will it take?” is usually the first question after “can you help me.” The honest answer depends on more than distance — here’s what actually drives a tow truck’s ETA.

What Sets the Initial Estimate

Dispatch gives an ETA based on which truck is closest and available, current traffic, and weather. A daytime call in clear weather on a main road is the fastest scenario. A call during a snowstorm, rush hour, or late at night when fewer trucks are running will run longer.

Why ETAs Can Change After Dispatch

A truck already en route to your call can get pulled into a higher-priority job — an active accident blocking a road, for example — which can push your ETA back. Reputable companies will call and update you if that happens rather than leaving you guessing.

Cash Calls vs. Motor Club Calls

Calling a towing company directly is usually faster than going through a motor club, since a direct call skips the dispatch handoff. See our motor club dispatch guide (Does AAA Work With Zielke Towing?) for more on how that routing works.

What Slows Things Down Most

  • Severe weather — lake-effect snow bands near Lake Michigan can shut down visibility fast
  • Rush hour on I-94 or I-196
  • Late-night calls when fewer trucks are staffed
  • Holiday weekends, when call volume spikes across the whole area

What You Can Do While You Wait

Stay in a safe position — see our roadside safety guide for where to wait. Keep your phone charged and reachable in case dispatch needs to reach you with an update.
