A tire is the single most likely thing to strand you. Not the engine, not the transmission — the tire. And two changes in the last fifteen years have made a flat far more disruptive than it used to be: most new vehicles no longer come with a spare, and the growth of all-wheel drive means the “just throw one tire on it” answer can cost you thousands of dollars in drivetrain damage.

This guide covers what to do when a tire lets go, which failures can be repaired and which absolutely cannot, and the all-wheel-drive rule that catches out more drivers than any other.
First: Get Safe, Then Get Practical
A blowout at speed is disorienting. The instinct to brake hard and pull over immediately is the wrong one.
- Grip the wheel and hold your line. A front blowout pulls hard toward the failed side. Don’t fight it with a sudden correction.
- Ease off the accelerator — don’t stab the brakes. Let the car slow gradually while you keep it straight.
- Signal and move right progressively, aiming for the widest, straightest piece of shoulder you can reach. Getting a hundred yards further to a safer spot is worth it. Driving a mile on a flat is not — you’ll destroy the wheel and possibly the fender liner and brake lines.
- Hazards on, and get everyone out on the far side from traffic, behind a barrier if there is one.
- Note exactly where you are — mile marker, exit, or cross street.
Then make an honest assessment about whether to change it yourself. On a residential street in Fair Plain with the car on level ground, fine. On the shoulder of I-94 with semis passing at seventy, or in a narrowed M-139 work zone with no shoulder at all, kneeling beside your car on the traffic side is a genuinely dangerous thing to do. Michigan’s Move Over law helps, but it does not stop every distracted driver. That’s a call, not a jack.
You Probably Don’t Have a Spare
A large share of vehicles built in the last decade ship without one, to save weight and cost. Drivers usually discover this at the worst possible moment. Open your trunk and check before you need to know. You’ll find one of four things:
A full-size spare. Increasingly rare, mostly on trucks and SUVs. Best case.
A compact or “donut” spare. Speed and distance limited — generally around 50 mph and short mileage. It’s designed to get you to a shop, not to Chicago. Note that on an all-wheel-drive vehicle, even a donut is a compromise, and manufacturers vary on how far they’ll allow it. Check your manual.
A sealant and compressor kit. This works on a small tread puncture and nothing else. It will not fix a sidewall tear, a blowout, or a tire that’s come off the bead. It also makes a mess that some shops charge extra to clean out before repairing.
Nothing at all. Common on vehicles with run-flat tires — which brings its own rules.
If you’re on run-flats
Run-flats let you continue at reduced speed for a limited distance after pressure loss — typically something like 50 miles at 50 mph, though it varies by manufacturer. That’s a genuine advantage. Two cautions: once a run-flat has been driven on while deflated, most manufacturers consider it scrap rather than repairable, and the “limited distance” is a maximum under good conditions, not a target. If the warning appears while you’re on I-94, get off at the next exit rather than pressing on to your destination.
Can It Be Repaired? The Rules Are Stricter Than Most People Think
Plenty of drivers assume any puncture can be plugged. Industry repair standards are considerably narrower than that, and for good reason — a badly repaired tire is a failure waiting to happen at highway speed.
Generally repairable: a puncture in the tread area, within the crown of the tire, roughly a quarter-inch in diameter or smaller, where the tire has not been driven on flat.
Not repairable, regardless of what anyone tells you:
- Sidewall damage. The sidewall flexes constantly and carries the structural load. A cut, gouge or puncture there is not fixable — not with a plug, not with a patch.
- Shoulder damage, in the transition between tread and sidewall. Same reasoning.
- Any bulge or bubble. That’s internal structural failure, and it means the tire can let go without further warning. Stop driving on it.
- A tire driven while flat. The internal structure gets chewed up even over a short distance, often invisibly from outside.
- Punctures larger than the standard limit, or multiple punctures too close together.
One more thing worth knowing: a proper repair is done from inside the tire, with the tire dismounted from the wheel so the inner liner can be inspected and a combination patch-plug installed. A plug jammed in from outside without dismounting is a temporary measure at best. If someone repairs your tire without taking it off the wheel, you did not get a permanent repair.
The All-Wheel-Drive Rule That Costs People Thousands
This is the most expensive thing in this article, and it’s the part most drivers have never been told.
On an all-wheel-drive vehicle, the tires must be closely matched in circumference. A tire with less tread is fractionally smaller in diameter, so it rotates slightly faster to cover the same ground. The AWD system reads that permanent speed difference as slip and responds by continuously working the center differential, transfer case or coupling — components that were designed to handle brief differences in traction, not a mismatch that never goes away.
The result is heat, accelerated wear, and eventually failure of a component that costs far more than a set of tires. Many manufacturers specify a tight tolerance for tread-depth difference across the vehicle — often only a few thirty-seconds of an inch — and some are stricter than others.
What this means practically: if you have an AWD vehicle with well-worn tires and one is destroyed, fitting a single new tire is usually the wrong answer even though it’s the cheapest one on the day. Your realistic options are replacing all four, or — if the other three still have substantial tread — buying a matching tire and having it shaved to match their depth, which some tire shops offer.
Check your owner’s manual for your specific vehicle’s tolerance, and get an honest tread-depth measurement across all four before deciding. We’d rather tell you this before you buy one tire than after your differential complains.
Two More Things That Catch People Out
TPMS sensors
Vehicles with tire pressure monitoring have a sensor inside each wheel. They can be damaged during careless tire changes, their batteries eventually die, and after a tire change some vehicles need a relearn procedure before the warning light clears. If your light stays on after new tires, that’s usually a sensor or relearn issue rather than a pressure problem — but don’t just ignore it, because then you’ve lost the warning system entirely.
Directional and staggered fitments
Directional tires have an arrow on the sidewall and only work correctly rotating one way — they can’t simply be swapped to the other side of the car. Staggered setups, common on performance and luxury vehicles, run different sizes front and rear, so a rear tire won’t fit the front. Both are worth knowing before you assume a spare or a swap will solve the problem.
Why Berrien County Is Hard on Tires
Our local conditions produce a very particular pattern of tire damage, and it’s spread across the whole year.
Freeze-thaw potholes. Southwest Michigan’s winters cycle above and below freezing repeatedly, which is precisely the condition that breaks up pavement. Spring here means impact damage — bent rims, sidewall bulges, and blowouts from a hard hit that seemed survivable at the time.
Construction debris. The M-139 reconstruction work through Benton Harbor and periodic work along I-94 and US-31 put screws, staples, wire and metal fragments on the road. Narrowed work-zone lanes also leave you nowhere safe to stop when something goes wrong.
Summer heat. Hot asphalt on a loaded car raises tire temperature and pressure, and an already-marginal tire fails under exactly those conditions. This is why blowouts cluster in July and August along the I-94 lakeshore corridor.
Road salt. Michigan salts heavily. Over years that corrodes wheels and valve stems, causing slow leaks that seem to come from nowhere — and seizes lug nuts, which is its own roadside problem when a wheel won’t come off.
Aging rather than wearing. Plenty of vehicles here — second cars, seasonal vehicles, trailers, RVs — cover very few miles. Their tires age out with tread still on them. Check the four-digit DOT date code on the sidewall; rubber degrades whether you drive on it or not.
What We Can Do at the Roadside
Depending on the situation, a tire call goes one of three ways.
Spare fitted on scene. If you have a usable spare and the location is safe to work in, that’s often the fastest resolution and you’re moving again quickly.
Tire replacement. Tell us the size off your sidewall when you call — the string that looks like 225/65R17 — and we can talk through options rather than guessing on arrival.
Tow. If there’s no usable spare, if the wheel is damaged, if it’s an AWD needing a properly matched set, or if the location simply isn’t safe to work in, we take the vehicle where it needs to go. On a flatbed if it’s all-wheel drive — those must travel with all four wheels off the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you bring a tire to me, or only tow the car?
Both are options. Call with your tire size and location and we’ll tell you what’s realistic — sometimes fitting your spare on scene is the quickest fix, sometimes a tow is genuinely the better call.
Do I really have to replace all four tires on my AWD?
It depends on how worn the other three are. If they’re nearly new, a matching replacement — possibly shaved to match — can work. If they’re well worn, replacing one risks expensive drivetrain damage. Check your owner’s manual for your vehicle’s tolerance and get the tread depths measured before deciding.
My tire has a bulge in the sidewall but holds air. Is it safe?
No. A bulge means the internal structure has failed and the tire can blow without further warning. Don’t drive on it, and don’t rotate it to the back and forget about it.
Is a plug from the outside good enough?
It’s a temporary measure. A proper permanent repair requires dismounting the tire, inspecting the inner liner for hidden damage, and installing a combination patch-plug from inside.
How far can I drive on a donut spare?
Check the sticker on the spare itself — typically around 50 mph and limited mileage. Treat it as transport to a shop, not as a tire.
